Genome-Environment Interactions in Inflammatory Skin Disease / 2018-02-28

2016 fondos y socioesInflammatory skin diseases affect a significant percentage of our global population. Atopic Dermatitis (AD) affects approximately 10% of children and 3% of adults worldwide. Psoriasis (Pso) affects approximately 2% of our population. These diseases remain poorly understood with limited understanding of their mechanism, endotypes, ontology and co-morbidities, affecting the quality of effective treatments. While there may be aspects of these diseases that overlap, others show little or no similarities e.g. their associated co-morbidities are generally quite distinct with Pso being linked with arthritis, psychiatric disorders, metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular sequelae while AD is associated with rhinitis, asthma, food allergy as well as cardiovascular complications. As a result, there is an immediate need for sophisticated, in-depth investigations of these diseases that address transformative topics. These studies include, but are not limited to, the impact of environmental factors.

Assessment of the uniqueness of diabetic cardiomyopathy relative to other forms of heart failure using unbiased pheno-mapping approaches / 2018-02-28

2016 fondos y socioesDiabetes contributes to the development of heart failure (HF) indirectly by promoting the progression of coronary artery disease and directly through the development of cardiomyopathy. Thus, diabetic patients have a 2.5-fold greater risk for HF as compared to those without diabetes. Epidemiological studies have reported a 4-fold higher prevalence of diabetes mellitus in HF patients (20%) compared to age-matched populations without HF (5%) which rises up to 40% in hospitalised HF patients. Over the last decades it became clear that there is a relationship between diabetes and HF, although not all patients with diabetes develop cardiomyopathy or evolve toward HF.

These grants support training workshops with a strong hands-on learning component that will build capacity for people living in WWF priority places in select countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Conservation Workshop Grants are essential to building local capacity in vulnerable communities and improving conservation efforts at a local and national scale America. Conservation Workshop Grants cover travel expenses, meals and accommodations, room rentals, materials, and other related costs. Administrative costs are no more than 15 percent of the grant and applicants may request up to $7,500 for the proposed training.

2016 fondos y socioesThe world has approximately 4 billion hectares of forest, representing almost 30% of the Earth\'s landmass, with roughly 56 percent of these forests lying in tropical and subtropical areas1. More than 1 billion people rely heavily on forests for their livelihoods2, and they are the most biologically-diverse ecosystems on land, home to more than half of all terrestrial species of animals, plants and insects3. Forests also play a vital role in global climate regulation through the sequestration and storage of carbon. But despite increased awareness of their importance, forests are experiencing escalating impact from human activities. Although the precise area is debated, each day at least 32,300 ha of forest disappear from Earth and at least another 32,300 ha of forest are degraded4. Across the world’s extant tropical forests it is estimated that 24% are intact, 46% are fragmented and 30% otherwise degraded5 . It has been calculated that the deforestation of tropical forests is respond.
